Gurgaon – from Mahabharta to Global Village

December 8, 2008

Well, Gurgaon has been carrying its own self, from the Mahabharta to the global village of 2008 (and beyond). Then it was the home of the knowledge guru, now it is the home of the knowledge companies. Gurgaon is evolving. As a resident of Gurgaon, I am equally pleased with the Gurgaon expressway, the Metro coming to Gurgaon and the shopping malls of Gurgan ( and more are coming up) as I am about the Hindustan Times(September 08)  and Gurgaon.com ( http://www.gurgaon.com/content/?p=218 ) waging a citizens’ war against administrative apathy and neglect.

I am also pleased, albeit with a touch of cynicism, that roads have been built in Gurgoan over the last few weeks. It feels quite different to drive on roads without potholes!

Today is also election result time – Delhi, Rajasthan, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh open their ballots today and we will know the fate of new governments in these states.

Developing Gurgaon

December 4, 2008

Gurgaon has come a long way from the late ninetees. Then Gurgaon was just some border town of Gurgaon, which had some industrial units. Now Gurgaon is the first destination for living in the NCR area. The most number of shopping malls are in Gurgaon, it has the largest call centre work force in the whole of India and houses some of the best corporate names in the whole world. Of late, online news sites are being dedicated to Gurgaon – www.gurgaon.com/content / www.gurgaon.net .

Ofcourse, these have resulted in some growth issues – rapid increase in infrastructure needs have resulted in some shortfall in supply – like electricity or water. Ofcourse I will agree some crime issues which are bigger than other issues in Gurgaon. One of them is petty crime like car jacking etc. Look here for more on this http://www.gurgaon.com/content/?p=280 . But overall I think Gurgaon still paints a pretty picture as compared to other cities. What we need now is some forums for more cultural events in Gurgaon. Till then…
